In AIKIDO: THE ART OF TRANSFORMATION Teja Bell and other contributors describe the
life and teachings of Robert Nadeau. Nadeau Sensei was one of the few foreigners to train in
Japan while O-Sensei was still alive. At the time, other Japanese students included several who
would become Senseis in their own right and go on to establish influential dojos outside of
Japan. Some well known examples are Tamura Nobuyoshi, Chiba Kazuo, Yamada Yoshimitsu,
and Kanai Mitsunari. Nadeau Sensei returned to California and helped spread Aikido in the USA
and elsewhere. His students offer recollections of his emphasis on the spiritual and meditative
qualities of Aikido that lie beneath and go beyond the physical techniques.
