Aikido may be thought of in terms of the “Four F’s”: Frame; Focus; Flow; Falling
Frame is stance (“kamae”). An upright posture (“shisei”) without tension, with vital energy ready
to extend, the body is prepared for action.
Focus is paying attention from beginning to end (“zanshin”).
Flow is movements of the body and hands that blend with the force of the attack (“awase”) and
use it to create techniques through unbalancing the uke (“kuzushi”).
Falling is going down or rolling as you sacrifice yourself (“ukemi”) so that your partner may
learn.
